On a hot summer’s day, twenty-one members of the William Hurt Foundation and Yokoi family were served tea in the historical Shoya House located on the property of the Huntington Library and Gardens.

The group was treated to a tour of the House and observed Bonryaku by Soyo Yoko Nakamori.  Robert Hori, Toshie and Frank Mosher Associate Director of Botanical Cultural Programs, narrated while guests were treated to Japanese sweets and tea.  

In the midst of summer, summer tea bowls and glass utensils were used to bring out a feeling of coolness.  A kakejiku with the writing of Wa kei sei jaku by Itsugai roshi hung in the tokonoma to help guests grasp the principles of Chado.

The group left with a feeling of calmness and enjoyed the opportunity to share a bowl of tea with each other.
