Tea ceremony Demonstration
May 17, 2025
South Coast Botanic Garden

Surrounded by roses in full bloom, the Urasenke Tankokai Los Angeles Association hosted a public tea ceremony demonstration at the South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes. On May 17th, 22 guests attended the first seating, and 7 attended the second seating. This marked the second year in a row that the tea ceremony event was held at the South Coast Botanic Garden.

The host and assistant host roles were rotated between the two seatings by Ms. Shinoi Osuka and Ms. Rina Noda of Ogawa Shochu. Commentary was provided by Ms. Karen Ishii, also from Ogawa Shachu.

The tea utensils were chosen carefully with seasonal variations such as an Ajisai or hydrangea painted natsume (tea caddy) with Wajima lacquerware, and a chashaku (tea scoop) named green maple which is a seasonal plant around May. As the event was held in a botanical garden, thorough attention was given throughout to harmonize with nature. In a creative and nature-themed twist, a Fitz and Floyd cookie jar was repurposed as the water container, reflecting a fresh interpretation beyond traditional conventions.

Towards the end of the event, guests who were interested were given explanations of the tea utensils, offering a chance to learn about the beauty and meaning behind these often-unfamiliar tools. This Ryurei Style tea ceremony, free from rigid formality, offered participants a peaceful and enriching experience along with a moment of genuine connection. We hope guests were able to feel the spirit of tea, which teaches us to cherish “this moment and once in a lifetime encounter.”
