Rikyuki

Nichiren Shu Beikoku Betsuin

Held on a beautiful Spring day, March 23, chajin, students and friends from all Southern California commemorated the annual Rikyuki at Nichiren Shu Beikoku Betsuin in Los Angeles. It is a day that reflects on the life, influence and virtues of the life of Sen Rikyu (1522-1591). CoA Ann Abe welcomed the audience and thanked invited guests. 76 people participated.

Every year, a shachu is invited to present the Kucha or ceremonial tea offering. Mme. Sosei Ogawa Shachu and her students had the honor for this solemn tribute to Rikyu. The teishu was Mrs. Sosui Kusakabe and the hanto was Ms. Yoko Ishii. Kyokai managers and instructors were also invited to the Hanayose floral tributes to Rikyu-koji. Bright, seasonal flowers were arranged on hanging containers.

Sweets and tea were served to all the guests. Hanaikada was made under the direction of Mme. Soshin Kodama and kyokai volunteers. On the tokonoma hung an image of Rikyu-koji and signed by Tantansai with the characters Sei Jaku (Purity and Tranquility). A single candle was lit that symbolically leads the way, welcoming Rikyu to the tea gathering.

After a short break, Mr. Arthur Wayu Kennedy sensei presented a lecture. Arthur Wayu Kennedy, Vice CoA, is a Soto Zen Buddhist priest and instructor from Yokoji – Zen Mountain Center. In the wake of the Los Angeles fires he gave a brief talk on the development of Sumidemae (laying of charcoal procedure) and the constructive use of fire in Chado. He encouraged us to follow the teachings of Rikyu sama and to continue to practice Chado even during difficult times. This will give us hope and comfort.
