SAGES Wellness ActivityMarch 12th 2025Long Beach Convention Center
On March 12, 2025, SAGES (Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons) held its annual general meeting at the Long Beach Convention Center. The Society presents an annual, large-scale international conference attended by over 3,000 surgeons from around the world with the aim of sharing cutting edge medical technology and knowledge. Dr. Yusuke Watanabe of Hokkaido University, who is a representative of the SAGES program committee, proposed holding a tea ceremony to introduce Japanese culture as part of the wellness activities of the SAGES conference. In response, a tea demonstration was held with the support of the Los Angeles Tankokai. Sweets and tea were served to 20 participants.
Ms. Mika Duffy were teishu on the misonodana. Ms. Soyu Kikkawa was the hanto. Guests of honor and invited guests took their seats. Mr. Scott Burner gave narration of the history of tea and the meaning of shikishi written with the characters (Wa Kei Sei Jaku), as well as the movements and etiquette as the demonstration progressed.
In the tea gathering, participants experienced the depth of Japanese culture and learned about the spirit of wabi and the concepts of wa kei sei jaku. Dr. Watanabe was deeply impressed by the significance of re-examining oneself and others through drinking tea with others.
We hope that this tea gathering was an unforgettable experience for all participants and hopefully it will contribute to future cultural exchange.
